Few struggles carry as much shame as sexual sin. Many believers sincerely want to live with purity. They want to honor God with their bodies and their choices, but sometimes they fall, sometimes repeatedly, and after a while a painful thought begins to grow. Maybe I've ruined this part of my life. Maybe purity is something I've already lost. For some people that feeling of failure becomes so heavy that they begin to distance themselves from God. They assume that he must be disappointed, or that their past disqualifies them from walking closely with him again. But the message of the gospel says something very different. God's grace is not limited to the moments when we succeed. It reaches us even in the places where we have failed. In 1 Corinthians 6 9 to 11, the Apostle Paul lists several kinds of sin, including sexual sin, but then he says something powerful, and such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Notice that phrase? Such were some of you. The early church was filled with people who had complicated pasts, people who had made serious mistakes, people whose lives had been shaped by sin. Yet through Christ their story did not end there. They were washed, the gospel does not erase the reality of our past, but it does give us a new beginning. Purity in the Christian life is not simply about never failing, it is about choosing to walk in a new direction. Sometimes people imagine purity as something fragile that can only be kept if it is never broken. But Scripture shows that God is able to restore what has been damaged. King David understood this deeply. After falling into serious sin, he cried out to God in Psalm 5110, Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. David did not pretend his sin hadn't happened. He brought it honestly before God and asked for renewal. Over the years I've spoken with many believers who felt like their failures in this area had permanently defined them. They carried guilt long after they had already asked God for forgiveness. But the cross of Christ was not partial. Jesus did not die only for the sins we feel comfortable talking about. He died for all of them. 1 John 1 9 reminds us, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. That promise includes every area of life, even the ones we feel most ashamed about. Restoring purity often begins with honesty, bringing our struggles into the light, turning back toward God instead of hiding from Him. And sometimes it includes seeking accountability from trusted believers who can walk alongside us. Failure does not have to define the future. In Christ there is always a path forward. Purity is not only about the past we wish we could change, it is about the direction we choose to walk from this moment forward. And the same grace that forgives us is also the grace that helps us begin again.
