Choosing who to marry is one of the most important decisions a person will make. Marriage is not just a romantic relationship, it is a lifelong partnership, a covenant where two lives become deeply connected, emotionally, spiritually, and practically. Because of that, the Bible encourages believers to approach marriage with wisdom and discernment. In Proverbs 3, 5-6, we read, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. That principle applies deeply when considering marriage. Before looking for the right person, it is important to first make sure your own life is being shaped by a relationship with God. A healthy marriage grows best when both people are pursuing the Lord individually. One of the clearest biblical instructions about relationships appears in 2 Corinthians 6 14. Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. This verse speaks to the importance of shared faith. When two people are moving in different spiritual directions, it often creates tension in the most important areas of life. Faith influences values, priorities, and decisions about the future. But shared belief alone is not the only thing to consider. Character matters deeply. Over time, a person's true character reveals itself through how they treat others, through humility, through honesty, through patience during difficult moments. Galatians 5 22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities are powerful indicators of spiritual maturity. A godly spouse is not someone who is perfect, but they are someone whose life shows evidence of growing in these kinds of qualities. It is also wise to observe how a person handles responsibility, how they treat family, how they speak about others, and how they respond when things don't go their way. These everyday patterns often reveal far more about someone than their words alone. Patience is another important part of discernment. In a culture where relationships often move quickly, it can be tempting to rush into commitment based on strong emotions. But wisdom often grows through time. Taking time allows character to become visible and trust to develop. Marriage is not simply about finding someone who makes life exciting. It is about finding someone who will walk beside you through both the joyful and difficult seasons of life. And when that partnership is built on shared faith, mutual respect, and a desire to honor God, it creates a foundation that can endure far beyond the early emotions of a relationship.
