Why Does God Sometimes Feel Silent?
You are praying. You are reading. You are showing up — but God feels completely absent. And you are starting to wonder if something is wrong with you.
In this episode, I break down why God sometimes feels silent, what the Bible says about seasons of spiritual dryness, and what you are supposed to do when heaven feels like it has gone quiet.
In this episode:
• Why the feeling of God's silence does not mean God is actually absent — and what it usually does mean
• What the Bible shows about how God's greatest servants experienced seasons of silence and what they did with them
• How to stay faithful and keep moving toward God even when you cannot feel Him
Walk & Warfare exists to answer the hard questions about faith, suffering, doubt, salvation, and what it actually looks like to follow Christ in the world we live in today. No fluff. No performance. Just real biblical answers for real people.
Anthony Jennings founded Walk & Warfare to give believers — and seekers — a place to wrestle honestly with the Bible and come out with something they can stand on.

Many sincere believers eventually face a difficult question. Why does God sometimes feel silent? You pray, you ask for guidance, you ask for help, but instead of clear answers, there is only quiet. For many people, this silence can feel confusing or even discouraging. You begin to wonder, is God listening? Did I do something wrong? Has God withdrawn from me? The Bible shows us that this experience is not unusual. Even faithful people in Scripture went through seasons where God seemed silent. King David wrote many psalms during times when he felt distant from God. In Psalm 13.1, he cries out, How long, O Lord, will you forget me forever? How long will you look the other way? David loved God deeply, yet he still experienced moments when God's presence felt distant. The silence of God does not mean the absence of God. Often God is working in ways we cannot yet see. Sometimes God's silence teaches us to trust him more deeply. Faith grows strongest when it is not dependent on constant reassurance. Hebrews 11 1 reminds us, faith shows the reality of what we hope for. It is the evidence of things we cannot see. Trusting God in silence can become one of the ways our faith matures. Other times, God's silence invites us to slow down and seek him more intentionally. In a noisy world filled with distractions, it can be difficult to hear the quiet voice of God. Scripture often shows that God speaks not in dramatic displays, but in gentle moments. In 1 Kings 19, the prophet Elijah expected God to appear in powerful signs like wind, earthquakes, or fire, but God spoke through a gentle whisper. Sometimes the problem is not that God is silent. Sometimes it is that our lives are so busy that we struggle to notice his quiet leading. There are also moments when God's silence protects us. We may ask for direction or answers before we are ready to receive them, or we may be asking for something that God knows would ultimately harm us. Just as a loving parent sometimes withholds an answer for the good of their child, God's silence can reflect wisdom rather than distance. Isaiah 55 8 reminds us, My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, and my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. God sees the full picture of our lives in ways we cannot. Even when we cannot understand his timing, his purposes remain good, and sometimes the silence we feel is actually an invitation to remain close to him. James 4.8 says, Come close to God, and God will come close to you. The answer to silence is not abandoning faith, it is continuing to seek God even when we cannot immediately see what he is doing. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly assures his people that he has not abandoned them. In Isaiah 41.10, God says, Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. Even when his voice feels quiet, his presence remains. The truth is that many believers look back on seasons of silence and realize that God was working the entire time, guiding events, shaping character, preparing them for something they could not yet see. God's silence is not rejection, it is often preparation. So if you are in a season where God feels quiet, do not assume that he is distant. Continue to pray, continue to trust, and continue to seek him through his word. Because the same God who sometimes speaks and whispers has promised that he will never leave his people. And even in the silence, he is still at work.
