How Do I Hear God's Voice?
Almost every Christian wants to hear from God — but very few have been given a clear biblical framework for how that actually works.
In this episode, I break down what the Bible says about how God speaks, how to develop the ability to recognize His voice, and how to avoid the common mistakes that lead people astray.
In this episode:
• The primary ways the Bible shows God communicating with His people and which are still active today
• How to distinguish God's voice from your own thoughts, emotions, and the enemy's counterfeits
• Practical steps for developing a lifestyle of hearing from God that is grounded in Scripture
Walk & Warfare exists to answer the hard questions about faith, suffering, doubt, salvation, and what it actually looks like to follow Christ in the world we live in today. No fluff. No performance. Just real biblical answers for real people.
Anthony Jennings founded Walk & Warfare to give believers — and seekers — a place to wrestle honestly with the Bible and come out with something they can stand on.

Many Christians want to hear God's voice. They want to know that God is guiding them, speaking to them, leading their lives. But when people ask how to hear God's voice, they often imagine something dramatic, an audible voice, a sudden message, a powerful moment that removes all uncertainty. And because those experiences are rare, many believers quietly wonder if they are doing something wrong. They ask themselves, why don't I hear God the way other people seem to? But when we look carefully at the Bible, we see that God most often guides his people in quieter ways. The primary way God speaks is through his word. 2 Timothy 3.16 says, All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. When we read Scripture, we are not simply reading ancient words. We are hearing the voice of God revealed through what he has already spoken. God's word shapes our thinking, it corrects our direction, and it teaches us the kind of life that honors him. Another way God speaks is through the work of the Holy Spirit. For believers, the Spirit begins shaping our conscience and our desires. Over time, we begin to sense conviction when something is not right, or a quiet peace when something aligns with God's wisdom. Jesus spoke about this in John 16 13 when he said, When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. This guidance often happens gradually. The Spirit works within our hearts to shape how we think, what we value, and the direction we pursue. Over the years I've noticed that many people expect God's voice to sound loud and unmistakable, but more often his guidance feels steady and quiet, through scripture that speaks directly to a situation, through wise counsel from trusted believers, through circumstances that begin to open or close certain doors. Proverbs 3 5-6 reminds us: trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Notice that the promise is not about hearing a voice that explains everything. The promise is that God will guide our paths as we trust him. Sometimes people worry that they might miss God's voice completely, but God is not hiding from those who sincerely seek him. Jeremiah 29 13 says, You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Hearing God's voice is often less about waiting for dramatic moments and more about building a life that stays close to him, through prayer, through scripture, through a heart that desires to follow him. And as that relationship grows, his guidance becomes clearer over time. Because the goal is not simply to hear a voice, the goal is to walk closely with the God who is already leading you.
