One of the most important questions many Christians wrestle with is this can a person lose their salvation? Or once someone truly comes to faith in Christ, are they secure forever? Sometimes this question appears during seasons of struggle. A believer may fall into sin or feel spiritually distant from God, and they begin to worry, have I lost my salvation? Did I somehow undo what God did in my life? To understand this question, it helps to first understand what salvation actually is. The Bible teaches that salvation is not something we achieve through our effort, it is something God accomplishes through his grace. Ephesians 2, 8-9 says, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God. If salvation were based on human performance, then it could be lost whenever we failed. But the gospel teaches that salvation rests on the finished work of Christ. When Jesus died on the cross, he paid for sin completely, not partially, not temporarily, but fully. That is why Jesus said in John 19 30, It is finished. The work of redemption was accomplished. Because of that, many passages in Scripture emphasize the security believers have in Christ. In John 10 28-29, Jesus said, I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. Notice the confidence in those words. Jesus does not describe salvation as fragile. He describes it as secure in his hands. Romans 8 38-39 gives another powerful reminder, for I am sure that neither death nor life, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. According to Scripture, the believer's security is not based on their ability to hold on to God, it is based on God's ability to hold on to them. At the same time, the Bible also teaches that genuine faith produces a transformed life. When someone truly comes to know Christ, the Holy Spirit begins shaping their heart and desires. This process is called sanctification. It does not happen instantly, and it does not mean believers never struggle with sin. But over time, a genuine relationship with God produces growth, repentance, and a desire to follow Him. That is why 1 John 2.19 says that those who permanently abandon the faith reveal that they were never truly part of it to begin with. In other words, true salvation is not something that disappears, it is something that endures. For believers who worry about losing their salvation, it's important to remember this. The Christian life includes struggle. It includes seasons of weakness, but those struggles do not cancel the grace of God. Salvation is not maintained by perfect behavior. It is secured by the work of Christ and sustained by the faithfulness of God. The same God who begins the work of salvation is also the one who carries it forward. Philippians 1 6 says, He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion. Our confidence is not in our perfection. Our confidence is in the faithfulness of the Savior who holds us.
